The traditional Chinese concept of soul (Hun-po) is combined with two elements which are Hun and Po. “Hun” governs the spiritual powers of thought and reasoning, while “Po” governs the power of movement of the body and limbs. If a person has been “struck by fright”, his Hun and Po are diminished. It will make the person’s thinking sluggish and the way they act slowly or problematically. By the ritual of “summoning the soul” or shoujing (literally, to “take away fright”), we seek to restrain the soul and thereby settle the heart and mind to make the spirit full once more.
